Spreading AWESOME Through Social Networking – People of Prince George, BC

Otway Trails Prince George BC

My family and I are now into our third year here in Prince George. I must say that I am constantly AMAZED at what I have been told is the biggest asset of PG.

Now it isn’t the trees, the fact that rush hour is about 50 cars, that everything is 15mins away, the fact that we have the University of Northern BC (UNBC), the amazing Two Rivers Art Gallery or Exploration Place (our 2nd home in the winter)… it isn’t even the fact that there are so many lakes so close by… It is the people.

I was told this long before I moved up here. But the more I am in this city the more my jaw drops at stories like this one. I think it is even MORE special because just this weekend, my kids actually enjoyed those exact trails with friends. Big HUGE thanks to Barry Hagen and his wife!

PS. This is the power of social networking right here. Sharing stories that are AWESOME! I found this out from a friend’s feed on Facebook and I shared it on Twitter…and now with you. “Spread AWESOME!”

If you have any other AWESOME stories like this one about the amazing people of PG, please share below. I’d love to be able to cover them here on this blog.

Shawna, I just discovered your blog – via my Linkdin page where I get Garth Frizzell’s Tweets, how’s that for a network!! Your page is exactly what our organization (www.resourcesnorth.org) needs right now as we’re just dipping our toes into social networking. I’ve sent all my staff a link to your page so we can learn from you.

For the next two weeks we are all taking 1/2 hour a day to spend some time on social networking sites Listening and Engaging and to get into the habit of doing so, and feeling comfortable with it. It’s going to take some time, but I think it will grow on us. It’s a huge deal putting yourself out there… thus, here I am trying to set an example! I’m actually really surprised at how much more I’m learning about my community and our affiliated organizations now that I’m making a conscious effort to do so.

So in response to this post about AWESOME people, I encourage you to visit the Caledonia Ramblers website and learn about the efforts of Nowell Senior who is building a wheelchair accessible boardwalk at the Ancient Forest…it is truly a labour of love! And Nowell is AWESOME!

Thanks Melanie! Welcome to the blog. I love what you said about what you are learning about the community. At the end of the day, social media is just in its infancy… as businesses learn how to bring it through all areas of their operation, they will end up seeing amazing results. It is faster to send info out and also have many more eyes on what you do than ever before. The best part is that in communities up north, we are already really good about being social in person… northern “peep” are already friendly, personable and ready to help each other out. Now, to translate that is just a matter of setting up systems that allow us to do it without feeling like we are wasting our time.

Looking forward to seeing what you are up to.. I will be sure to check out those links. I am going to build more upon the “live” portion of Live Work over the next couple of months.

I have done presentations up at Fort Saint James as well and the whole northern community just amazes me. Love it.
